Fraunhofer Battery Alliance

Welcome to the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance

The 26 member institutes of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance develop technical and conceptual solutions along the entire value chain of electrochemical energy storage systems up to the application level either on behalf of customers or in publicly funded projects together with industry. Our expertise and many years of experience range from materials development to system integration of both mobile and stationary storage systems.

With the extensive competences of more than 700 experts, a unique infrastructure and the experience gained from hundreds of research projects, the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance is a flagship of the German and European battery research landscape. In addition to advising numerous German and European committees, the experts make their battery knowledge available in a wide range of training courses.

For industry, the comprehensive research infrastructure and cross-institute pooling of expertise offers a wide range of possible links, particularly in the investment-intensive field of battery research – from raw materials, materials research and cell production to systems and integration as well as end-of-life and recycling. These topics are supplemented by simulation, digitalization as well as extensive testing and evaluation.

The Batalyse GmbH developed a software system to automate time consuming manual data processing like file gathering, categorization and evaluation for R&D, production and QM with focus on electrochemistry. Sort and filter your test, analysis and production data for specific materials, projects, customers and performance. Link material properties, with production parameters and product performance, receive structured data and apply your AI to optimize your processes and products. Batalyse is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer ICT and the software is used by many institutes of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance.
In 2019, volytica diagnostics GmbH, another successful spin-off of the Fraunhofer IVI, was founded, focusing on reliable condition monitoring of batteries based on field data. volytica diagnostics focuses on safe and easy-to-integrate battery diagnostics solutions based on decades of research.
