Transforming batteries with light.
illumion’s innovative charge photometry technology provides dynamic, operando insights into active particle state-of-charge and morphology. The technique was developed in the research groups of Prof. Dame Grey and Prof. Rao at the University of Cambridge, and illumion span out in 2022 to bring the optical microscopy-based technique to the wider battery material research community.
Launching later this year, the illumionONE is the culmination of these efforts: a bench-top, plug-and-play platform, utilising optically accessible coin cells to enable researchers to visualise energy storage processes in real-time, at sub-micron scales. Combined with its universal chemistry applicability, this unlocks a diverse range of applications, such as:
- determining how much electrode material is active and where performance is lost,
- determining how much electrode material is active and where performance is lost,
- exploring what limits charging performance.
The general applicability and orthogonality of the technique, providing individual particle state-of-charge and morphology information alongside synchronised electrochemistry data, opens up new possibilities for battery research and development in the pursuit of next-generation battery materials.
