Our research further encompasses advanced sensor and diagnostic technologies for laboratory and field investigations, such as ultrasonic tomography and fiber-optic temperature sensing, enabling high-resolution monitoring of internal states and thermal behavior. Additional research activities address the influence of charging processes on batteries, the development and economic optimization of storage operations in the energy market and for end customers, including vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home, the assessment of charging infrastructure demand and economic efficiency, and the design and operation of power supply systems, e.g., for neighborhoods, industrial companies, airports, or mining companies.

Further professorships contribute expertise in innovative electrode manufacturing processes and in the development and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. These approaches are employed to improve diagnostic accuracy, enable early fault detection during operation, and enhance the parameterization and computational efficiency of simulation models and estimation algorithms. CARL also hosts the Aachen branch of the Helmholtz Institute Münster, which is part of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
