Traditional quantification of cell degradation as “capacity loss” represents a simple and well-established means to estimate the lifetime of a cell. This singular parameter is unable to capture the combination of complex degradation mechanisms working beneath the surface. Physics based models are developed to accurately simulate these interactions and requires correspondingly numerous parameters. Degradation Mode Analysis (DMA) has been used in this work as it combines the simplicity similar to capacity fade whilst capturing different degradation effects. DMA has been well described in (Dubarry et al., 2012). In this work, we demonstrate how different operating conditions can accelerate certain specific degradation modes which is hidden from view from a capacity fade perspective. Such divergence in degradation modes subsequently led to an earlier cell failure compared to a cell experiencing similar rates of increase in degradation modes. This method can be further incorporated into path dependent aging of a cell to predict the lifetime given expected cell operating conditions.
