This poster presents the Joint Research Centre’s (JRC) efforts in supporting the implementation of the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, focusing on sustainability across the battery lifecycle. This Regulation emphasizes battery performance and durability as a key sustainability metric and mandates the European Commission to introduce minimum requirements.

The JRC supports the development of delegated acts to establish minimum performance and durability requirements, as specified in Article 10 of the Regulation. This includes providing technical input, concept proposals, and participating in standardization activities. The JRC developed a requirement concept with flexible thresholds, incorporating a ‘stress factor’ to evaluate the impact of test conditions on durability. This concept is supported by a database of over 7,000 entries, aiding informed decisions on threshold values.

The JRC also conducts policy-relevant experimental campaigns, e.g., on e-bike batteries and stationary storage systems, focusing on performance and durability at both pack and cell levels. These studies reveal degradation pathways and help deconvolute contributions from issues like balancing. The findings support standard development and implementing legislation.

Through these efforts, the JRC plays a vital role in shaping the EU’s approach to battery sustainability, ensuring that durability becomes a transparent and prioritized aspect of the market.
