Recycling of LIBs is essential because they comprise a high portion of valuable metals, such as Ni, Mn Co, Li and others including Al, Cu and Fe
Storing batteries before recycling can cause fire hazard due to residual voltage left in the batteries.
So Electrochemical Discharge is a safe, quick, inexpensive pretreatment solution (Battery need to be discharged below safe voltage < 2.5 V). While comparing three batteries from different manufacturer: we have observed that Panasonic battery discharged more efficiently and after rebound remains below 2.5 V [2]. With different 18650 batteries, we discovered that the grade of the casing material i.e. has a significant impact on the batteries discharging behavior along with the LIBs chemistries.
