The exhbition of the combined event Battery Day NRW and Advanced Battery Power on April, 9-11, 2018 in Münster, Germany, is the meeting point for participants and an interesting market place for products and developments all around the energy sector.
MEET (Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology) is the battery research center at Münster University. It comprises an international team of around 140 scientists working on the research and development of innovative electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density, longer durability and maximum safety. The aim is to improve batteries for use in electric cars and stationary energy storage systems. MEET brings together basic scientific research and industrial applications at one location. To this purpose, it works together closely with both other scientific institutions and partners from industry. The laboratory facilities include the modules functional material synthesis, electrode and cell production, cell testing and electrical measurement technology.
The institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) is an integrated institute with three chairs. Prof. Rik W. De Doncker holds the chair on Power Electronics and Electrical Drives and Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer holds the chair on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems and Prof. Egbert Figgemeier holds the chair on Ageing and Lifetime Prediction of Batteries. Research activities are focused on all type of applications which require power electronics and energy storage systems.
The Chair on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems is organized in three sections with a clear focus on battery and energy storage systems. Our tasks is to make the best out of existing battery technologies for any type of application by appropriate selection of the battery technology, optimum sizing, lifetime-maximizing operating and management strategies, battery system designs for reliable and safe operation, and precise monitoring and diagnostics.
PEC delivers the building blocks for the development and manufacturing of large format cells, modules and battery packs for automotive, aerospace and defense applications. PEC’s offerings include R&D test equipment and automated cell finishing lines automating all process steps after the electrolyte filling (soaking, formation, grading, degassing, ageing, stand loss, sorting…).

Helmholtz Institute Münster
One of the key issues for successfully transforming the energy sector is the question of long-term storage for large quantities of electricity in the smallest possible space. The Saueressig GmbH + Co. KG has brought a new technology for the compression of dry powder materials and lithium ion battery electrodes on to the market. This technique increases the efficiency of batteries and capacitors production because active materials can be prepared without wet coating and subsequent drying through the processing of so-called dry films. In addition, solvent-based additives are not necessary for this production process. Innovative approaches are involved since this process depends on special conditions: highest line pressures, lowest web tension and smallest thickness tolerances in the final product. With their patented gap control, Saueressig units achieve product thickness tolerances in the micrometer range.
