MEET (Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology) is the battery research center at Münster University. It comprises an international team of around 140 scientists working on the research and development of innovative electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density, longer durability and maximum safety. The aim is to improve batteries for use in electric cars and stationary energy storage systems. MEET brings together basic scientific research and industrial applications at one location. To this purpose, it works together closely with both other scientific institutions and partners from industry. The laboratory facilities include the modules functional material synthesis, electrode and cell production, cell testing and electrical measurement technology.

The institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) is an integrated institute with three chairs. Prof. Rik W. De Doncker holds the chair on Power Electronics and Electrical Drives and Prof. Dirk Uwe Sauer holds the chair on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems and Prof. Egbert Figgemeier holds the chair on Ageing and Lifetime Prediction of Batteries. Research activities are focused on all type of applications which require power electronics and energy storage systems.

The Chair on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems is organized in three sections with a clear focus on battery and energy storage systems. Our tasks is to make the best out of existing battery technologies for any type of application by appropriate selection of the battery technology, optimum sizing, lifetime-maximizing operating and management strategies, battery system designs for reliable and safe operation, and precise monitoring and diagnostics.

Proper preparation of the active material is the basis for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The particles must have the right size and must also be properly wetted to ensure optimal further processing of the material. Bühler offers decades of experience in the wet grinding and dispersing technology. The reliable and proven equipment is suitable for the preparation of the active material. With extensive knowledge in the processing of nanoparticles Bühler supports the manufacturing process of the active material .

For the expected growth created by the electric mobility and stationary applications, conventional batch and semi-continuous mixing approaches will no longer fulfill the requirements of electrode slurry processing. Therefore, Bühler has developed a novel process for fully continuous electrode slurry production. The technology is based on twin screw mixing which combines raw material handling (simultaneous constant dosing of all liquid and solid components of the recipe), pre-mixing, kneading, fine dispersing and degassing in a single continuous device.

The new process provides a very high productivity (2’400 l/h) while simultaneously, the investment (up to 3 times less compared to batch mixing processes) and operating cost (labor, energy consumption of mixing line and dry room) are significantly reduced.

One of the key issues for successfully transforming the energy sector is the question of long-term storage for large quantities of electricity in the smallest possible space. Forschungszentrum Jülich, die Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU Münster) and RWTH Aachen University are determined to accelerate the search for solutions. At the Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS), jointly founded by these three institutions and operated as a branch office of Forschungszentrum Jülich, work focuses on electrolytes – the most important component in all batteries.


The institute pools and focuses the expertise of all three partners in order to develop concepts for future stationary electrochemical storage. Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology (MEET) at WWU Münster is an institute with an international reputation in the field of rechargeable lithium and lithium-ion batteries with liquid and polymer electrolytes. This outstanding competence in the field of electrochemistry is complemented by Forschungszentrum Jülich’s expertise in materials science. At Jülich, priority is given to the investigation, synthesis, and development of cation- and anion-conducting ceramics. The world-class research at RWTH Aachen University rounds off the cooperation between universities and a research establishment for the characterization of large cells and anion-conducting ceramics.

This technique increases the efficiency of batteries and capacitors production because active materials can be prepared without wet coating and subsequent drying through the processing of so-called dry films. In addition, solvent-based additives are not necessary for this production process. Innovative approaches are involved since this process depends on special conditions: highest line pressures, lowest web tension and smallest thickness tolerances in the final product. With their patented gap control, Saueressig units achieve product thickness tolerances in the micrometer range. The electrode tapes and dry films, which are compressed at this time, are essential for the design and performance of lithium ion batteries and capacitors.
As a technical architect for process and application development including the implementation of industrialized methods for individual customer processes, the in-house manufacturing and extensive know-how of Saueressig is very impressive.
